If there's any neighborhood in Pittsburgh that has changed the most in recent years, it's East Liberty.
The neighborhood is a symbol of gentrification, now home to luxury lofts, several restaurants, and easy access to the burgeoning tech hub at Bakery Square in nearby Larimer (although renters like to call themselves part of East Liberty in part because of the membership - due to gentrification).
While we could spend a lot of time discussing the gentrification of neighborhoods like these (we encourage you in the comments!), in our neighborhood guide series we want to take a look at what East Liberty is all about.nowand highlight the history and some of the places we visited when exploring the neighborhood, namely the restaurants and some limited attractions.
East Liberty History and Map
In the early days of Pittsburgh's history, the land now known as East Liberty was owned by a few people.
East Liberty boomed in the mid-19th century when Thomas Mellon married Sarah Jane Negley (daughter of one of the landowners) and they began renting land. At the same time, they also worked to obtain the area's streetcar stops and a station for the Pennsylvania Railroad, which helped its growth.
Over the next few decades, many prosperous industrialists made their home in East Liberty (then Collins Township) and many immigrants also moved into the growing community. It was at this time that Pittsburgh annexed the township and began to develop into a thriving commercial center.
In the mid-1900s, a series of government policies were enacted that hit East Liberty especially hard and, along with the steel meltdown, ensured that the neighborhood was economically depressed for decades.
It wasn't until the early 2000's that interest in East Liberty began to shift with the addition of national retailers such as Home Depot and Whole Foods. More businesses followed, including retail stores, a variety of dining options (which is growing fast), Google just a few blocks away, luxury condos and a few trendy hotels.
All of this came at the expense of the neighborhood's minority residents who were displaced from their homes in the process, making East Liberty a prime example of gentrification in Pittsburgh, with all the connotations that come with that.
The East Liberty neighborhood is naturally located on the east end of Pittsburgh. and like the othersPittsburgh neighborhoods, East Liberty is pretty deformed.
Ignoring a few minor deviations, East Liberty's conventional boundaries are Negley Avenue to the west, Stanton Avenue to the north, Negly Run and East Liberty Blvd to the east, and Center Avenue and Penn to the south (depending on which is further away). to the south, when they cross on the outskirts of a neighborhood; however, for the Center Avenue boundary, we generally think of the busway just to the south as a clearer divider.)

Things to do in East Liberty
To be honest, as much as we explored East Liberty, we found that the rapid gentrification of the neighborhood has removed most of the hidden gems you might expect to find inPittsburgh neighborhoods.
While many places from the area's history remain, including several showcases for services and goods, a large percentage of the neighborhood is new within the last decade or so.
As it stands now, the top two reasons Pittsburgh residents visit the neighborhood are to shop at big chains like Whole Foods, Home Depot, and Target, or to head out to one of the many restaurants (more on that below).
But there are some unique places in East Liberty worth visiting in addition to these, and a hidden gem is theKelso Museum of Near Eastern Archeologyat Pittsburgh Seminary. This museum narrates the excavations of the Seminary in the Holy Land, and also has a very interesting exhibition on the history of written language that is worth visiting.
In addition to this museum, East Liberty is also home to some performing arts venues,o teatro kelly strayhornyquantum theater, which offer a variety of shows throughout the month, from live music to theater plays.
Also, most of East Liberty has been redeveloped with modern luxury condos that are hideously gaudy. However, there are still a few gems, like the East Liberty Presbyterian Church, that stand in stark contrast to the neighborhood's design.
Unfortunately, all these things happen and that's why we tend to stay in this neighborhood because of its new food scene.
Bars and Restaurants in East Liberty
The dining scene in East Liberty has been growing rapidly, and not a month goes by without a new restaurant being announced. As such, keeping up with all the restaurants has been a challenge (but a very tasty one). we were happy to accept everything the same).
The restaurants here range from international staples to restaurants that are trendy for their own sake. While many are average or above average in nature, others are stellar.
When it comes down to it, we recommend being quite perceptive when looking at the menus in this particular neighborhood, and it will help ensure you find a gem that suits your palate.
As with all restaurants featured in our neighborhood guides, the following is a list of restaurants we've visited or others that top our list to visit in the near future. Not a complete collection ofevery restaurantin the neighborhood.
The links will go to our reviews (where we visited) or the restaurant's website (where we didn't visit) to provide more information. Also keep in mind that East Liberty also has a pretty high restaurant turnover!
- Kahuna– A healthy poke and a juice bar.
- Margaux– A cafe serving coffee, cocktails, wines and small dishes with ample space.
- Muddy Waters Oyster Bar– Seafood and oyster bar with attractive prices and a good oyster happy hour.
- brewer– A tavern and restaurant in Pittsburgh for international brewery BrewDog.
- runaway bird– A small hot chicken joint that stays open late, serves alcohol and has a secret menu.
- Lorelei– Half cocktail bar, half beer hall, all set in the European Alps. Excellent drinks and small plates.
- commercial bar– A speakeasy with a stellar cocktail menu. Just see if you can find it first! (Currently open for private events only.)
- duo taqueria– A taco stand in the Duolingo building with a unique marketing element of "Learn Spanish, buy tacos!"Currently closed for winter renovations.
- taco county– A regional chain that sells cheap clubs with unique combinations that you can make yourself.
- Social de St. Clair– A cozy neighborhood bar with cocktails and a delicious gastropub menu.
- She is– An Ethiopian restaurant with excellent dishes made for sharing.
- to grow– National chain focused on healthy dishes with local ingredients.
- the smoothie factory– A fast-growing Pittsburgh milkshake chain with many unique creations.
- prohibition cakes– A bakery focused on alcohol-infused baked goods, formerly located in Point Breeze.
- Kelly's Bar and Lounge - An East End original that has evolved to suit today's scene.
- To slice– A local pizza chain serving New York-style slices (read: huge portions).
- Mola– A sushi-focused restaurant with additional items like bao and rice bowls.
- Bistro Paris 66– A popular French restaurant known for crepes and traditional dishes.
Information for visiting East Liberty
For a long time, we didn't visit much of East Liberty because we thought the parking situation was, in a word, horrible. Street parking is limited at best, and most garages are for large retailers only.
It wasn't until much later that we found out that there are, in fact, many surface lots and side streets in East Liberty that have parking meters, so most visitors don't even seem to park (judging by how empty the streets are). mostly). time, at least).
The two metered parking lots we usually park in are located on Beatty St/Mignonette St (behind Tana) and between Kirkwood and Broad, off Center Ave (across from Target), both of which are illustrated on our map above. Lots are metered late into the night, but you can sometimes find street parking next to them, where meters end at more conventional times.
Many of the neighborhood's upscale restaurants also offer valet parking for a fee.
East Liberty Hotels
As it stands now, there are two hotels in East Liberty-the ace of the hotel*yHotel Indigo.
Both are very modern hotels with attractive prices and are located within walking distance of many of the restaurants listed in this guide. If you're visiting and looking for a nice hotel with plenty of dining options close by, these two in the heart of the neighborhood are well worth considering. Otherwise, you might wantcheck out VRBOfor more accommodation options.
*The Ace Hotel closed at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and it looks like it will eventually change ownership and/or theme. As such, we do not recommend booking this hotel at this time.
